Who’s Your Stoops Era Running Back?

Channeling the Twittersphere is always fun because these short pieces are literally based upon the responses the audience gives. The last poll I posted on Twitter asked which running back Sooner Nation would prefer in the Stoops Era other than the late Adrian Peterson. The Candidates in hand were Quentin Griffin, Demarco Murray, Samaje Perine, and Joe Mixon; However honorable mention was given to Damien Williams and Allen Patrick.

Here’s how the results shook out:

To be quite honest, I was surprised by this poll— One guy in this group won a National Title, and he received the least amount of votes. Samaje Perine’s career was full of trucking moments as well as he is the owner of two records: The Oklahoma all-time rushing leader and the most yards rushed for in an NCAA Football game EVER. A few people considered the idea that Joe Mixon was the best running back on this list but I think it’s a case of recency— what has been in their minds lately.

Regardless, I agree with this poll. Demarco Murray is the second best running back to grace the Stoops Era as the leader of All-Purpose yards by a margin of nearly 700 yards front of Ryan Broyles. As a skill position player, Demarco ranks first among total points scored: 65 touchdowns. His combination of speed, power, agility, elusiveness, pass-catching, route running, and patience made him a force to be reckoned with in college and are still paying dividends for him in the NFL.
