Surprise, surprise. Oklahoma lands a commitment from 3-star defensive tackle, Zacchaeus McKinney out of Weatherford, Texas. This news came out of nowhere, but should be welcomed by many Sooner fans as recruiting at the position has been stagnant since the beginning of the season. McKinney is a former Jayhawk commit who reopened his recruitment back in November.

This is particularly big news for Oklahoma coach, Calvin Thibodaeux who has been criticized for lack recruiting momentum along the defensive line. It seems like he’s beginning to find his footing, and the timing couldn’t be better for the Sooners. McKinney becomes the 23rd commit in Oklahoma’s 2017 class.
Alright, I’m going to attempt to keep this shorts and sweet as my power just doesn’t want to seem to stay on today.
Talk about a surprise, huh? News couldn’t have come at a better time for Sooners fans with the reaction to the Mixon tape on social media. McKinney fulfills a big need for Oklahoma as the lack of depth at defensive line was becoming more and more evident throughout the season. McKinney has good size to play the 0 or 1 techniques at 6’4, 300 lbs.
McKinney is still raw in terms of his technique but has a nose for the ball. His aggressiveness and physicality are what stand out the most on film. He’s a mauler that uses his natural abilities to overpower and basically run over offensive linemen. McKinney is somewhat reminiscent of current Sooner, Du’Vonta Lampkin and you saw what kind of impact he made at the position once his suspension was over. However, like Lampkin, McKinney will need a little bit to develop physically before he is sent into the trenches.
Overall, not a bad pickup by Thibodaeux. McKinney will give him much needed depth at the position heading into next fall and adds a guy with all the physical attributes to make an impact at the position.
